Glassing…
When it comes to glassing, most surfers are a little confused about their choices. If you want a really light board and aren’t concerned about the lifetime of the board, you should first ask for the lightest weight blank available. Secondly, you will want 2 layers of 4 oz fiberglass on the deck and a single layer of 4 oz on the bottom. For an even stronger deck, you will want a layer of 5 oz and a layer of 4 oz instead. That is pretty standard in the industry. Longboards are generally glassed with a 6 and 4 oz deck and a layer of 4,5 or 6 oz on the bottom. It’s really hard for the shaper to guess how long a particular person’s board will last, because every surfer tends to have different areas where their board dents or caves in more than another person. When you find an area that you tend to destroy on every board, let the shaper know and an extra patch of cloth can be placed in that area to help lesson the problem.
When ordering an EPS epoxy board, you can glass the board a little stronger, because the foam is lighter than the standard polyester foam and actually needs a stronger glass job. EPS is similar to the foam used in a cheap ice chest or beer cooler and is easier to crush in your hand than poly foam.
